Echo North Joanna Ruth Meyer Books

I just finished reading Echo North and I have to say that I have some mixed feelings over this book.

Spoilers ahead.

On the positive side, I really loved the protagonist Echo. Echo had such strong character and resolve, more so than practically 99 percent of the other protagonists I have read. She is someone who loves fiercely and resolutely. She grows a lot as a person throughout this story and also realizes that true beauty is within oneself. I loved that by the end of the story, she owned her scars and didn’t regret them anymore because they showed the journey of who she was now and how her love with Hal came to be.

I also haven’t read such a breathtakingly magical story in such a long time. I know this is a sort of retelling of Beauty and the Beast but it was somehow fresh and new, yet harkens back to stories of old, told round a fire, steeped in tradition. I can’t even fairly describe it other than to say that it was enchanting. This author really knows how to create a portal to another world. Props to the author for creating this stunning world.

And now, to my one and only criticism of this story. It’s a big one and it’s why I couldn’t give it four or even five stars (even though I wanted to!). Hal does not deserve Echo’s love. Hal knowingly betrayed Echo. He knew that if she saved him, she would instead be taken forever as a prisoner of the Wolf Queen. When Echo finds this out, she is absolutely devastated. Rightly so!! She fought for Hal tooth and nail and finds that the love she was fighting for wasn’t so pure after all. The author tries to redeem the situation in the end by Echo forgiving Hal and saying it wasn’t his fault, that he was being manipulated by the Wolf Queen. This is a cop out. Hal knew what he did was wrong, which is why he didn’t want to fess up to the truth and the Wolf Queen had to compel him to tell Echo what he had done to her. Echo forgives him and they live happily ever after. I wish at the end, Echo could have realized she deserved better. Echo still would have saved him because, after all, she is Echo who is a kind, generous, loving human being who fights for those in need. She should have fought for herself in the end: not someone who wouldn’t put her first.

Overall, this was a stunning work of fiction but the ending of a book is just as important as the journey so, unfortunately, this one will only get three stars.

Happy reading, friends.

Echo North Joanna Ruth Meyer Books Reviews

I love a good fairy tale spin off. This one is awesome. Extremely well written.
I loved the fairy tale aspect of the story and that it really drew and kept my attention throughout the book.
This is a beautifully written blended retelling of some of my favorite stories East of the Sun, West of the Moon; Tam Lin; and Beauty and the Beast. It broke my heart and then glued the pieces back together with hope and the power of love. Full of gorgeous, frosty imagery and rich with magic, this is a perfect read for cold winter nights.
Fantastic! I loved this story, this world, these characters. I'm not sure why we haven't heard more about this book because it is truly fantastic. If you love Beauty and the Beauty/fairly take retellings, buy this book right now and read it. And tell your friends!
What an incredibly tedious story. I kept reading only because I bought the book at full price and hated to discard it. Pages and pages go by with the most ridiculous, long winded, repetitive scenarios. After the first cycle through this boring mess, you just want to give up and quit reading. You don't care for the main character anymore, nor the minor one, the prince who is trapped because all he does is sob...endlessly sob. Awful. Find something else instead of this novel.
This was an incredible, breathtaking story I simply could not put down!
I was feeling overwhelmed with work and hadn’t read a book in weeks, but then I was approved for an arc of Echo North through Netgalley. I initially opened it just to get a feel for it but then I read the first page, and the one after that and the one after that ... until I had the book finished a few hours later. I needed this book more than I can convey. It helped me relax and release some of the tension I was carrying around.

It’s a light read but a beautiful read. If you’re already familiar with the fairytale East of the Sun, West of the Moon then I think this book will hold a special place in your heart too. Echo North takes the original fairytale and makes it their own.

Echo’s father goes missing for weeks so she goes in search of him and finds him frozen in the snow, she’s then approached by a wolf and asked if she would like to make a bargain she can come live in the wolf’s house for a year in exchange for the magic to release her father so he can go home.

So this house, I’ve never read a EotSWofM retelling with a house like this. The rooms have to be bound to the house or they disappear and that’s the wolf’s job and that’s what he’s training Echo to do. My favorite room (and Echo’s) is the library, it’s a room with paintings all over the wall and once you touch the painting you enter it’s story. You become a participant! You can talk to the characters, interact, help them on their quest or escape imprisonment. It was completely fascinating and I really wish my library could do this because “hello, Rhys” *grins*

“It is like any wild thing that has been tamed. It is sometimes safe, and sometimes not.”

Just like in the original fairytale the heroine must sleep in a room without lighting any candles and seeing who else is in the room (I know I’d last half the night before striking a match lol). She knows the wolf is in the room with her when the lights go out but then it seems someone else takes his place ...

“She wept in the snow and crumbled to ash, for I was only pages in a book, burned and lost and gone forever.”

So one year, one year at this house goes by quickly for Echo, and every night she resists lighting a match until finally ....

“Don’t let go, says my heart.”

Thank you Netgalley for providing me an Arc in exchange for an honest review and thank you for the author for writing such a masterpiece (though I’m still sad over that reindeer).
