Norman Pugh is not a happy man. The ensuing chaos and confusion will have you gasping for breath as this fast paced hilarious romp takes flight. Who knows where it will end. Well, all I can say is – if this is the debut novel of Peter Barrie, I can’t wait to read his next. If you read this Mr. Barrie, and can think of anything I could do to persuade you to write more – do tell !
Norman Pugh is not a happy man. He is so desperately unhappy, in fact, that he is seriously contemplating suicide. But nothing in life is ever that simple, is it? We can’t always have what we want and Norman, whether he likes it or not, has been singled out to have greatness thrust upon him. Stopping Norman from killing himself is no easy task though and his guardian angel soon finds he needs a helping hand. But when he calls in a favour from “the other side”, all hell is let loose – quite literally.
This is an altogether brilliant parody of real world politics. We all know that our politicians and security services horse trade with their opposite numbers all the time. And we all know the chaos that can ensue when agents become double agents, triple agents or googleplexuple agents. Apply that scenario to the inhabitants of heaven and hell and the result is hilarious pandemonium.
Peter Barrie is an author who clearly cherishes the subtlety and richness of the English language. He uses it to great effect and when he needs a word that doesn’t really exist – he invents one to fit. Only someone at consummate ease with language and grammar can do that and get away with it. If you like fast-paced, clever, uproarious farce, you will love this book. But, be warned. Don’t take your eyes off the road for a moment. There are more twists and turns than the labyrinth at Knossos, yea even unto the final page. And don’t give it to your maiden aunt to read either – not if you’re expecting a sizeable inheritance.
Bring on the next one Mr. Barrie ... I’m itching to read it.
