Would you curse the one you love to save her life? In 1971, a shadow looms over Bestiavir, New Mexico; a town consumed in superstition and legend and dark secrets. The townsfolk's imagination feasted on tales surrounding a monster in the woods, the infamous Beast of Bestiavir. Those tales had finally begun to die down amidst the nightly televised horrors of Vietnam, until a devastating fire tears through the local VFW - so close to the feared haunted woods, the rumors arise again. Consumed with rising fear, the town is further shaken after almost losing a high school basketball star, Tony Brandner, and his beloved girlfriend, Suzie, in a horrible car accident. The town was already losing enough of its youth to the war, but on this fateful night, Tony must face a personal horror of his own choosing between letting his girlfriend die, or letting her be cursed. And what kind of life would she have if he did? Can both Tony and Suzie live with the dire consequences of their actions and learn how to survive with the knowledge of what lurks in the woods behind the trailer park? And if they do, will the town of Bestiavir and its people survive?

The Shadow of the Moon Michael Dunn 9780989412902 Books

This werewolf coming of age story (that's a genre now, right?) was an enjoyable read. It starts stronger than it ends and could have used with a more ruthless editor. But good writing and a good (if purposely predictable) story that pulls you along make it a worthwhile read.

I suggest not reading the back of the book summary. Gives too much away.

Recommended. Would read more from this author.

The Shadow of the Moon Michael Dunn 9780989412902 Books Reviews

Great story. The characters really drew me in. Lots of unexpected turns. Fun nostalgia from the 70's-great setting. A different take from your typical werewolf tale. Looking forward to the next one?
If you like books of this genre then this book is for you! Containing all the classic elements that you are looking for in a book about paranormal creatures. This book has romance, action and legend. But this author didn't stop there and brought something more to it.

The Shadow of the Moon has a fresh look and style to the telling of this story of werewolves including a plot that does more than move in a straight line forward. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more books by this author.
The story graps you within in the first chapter and I had a hard time putting it down all day. I sure hope the author writes a second picking up in 1989.
This is a well written story, with an excellent setting! I love that it is set in the 70's! The Shadow of the Moon hooked me in, and I didn't want to put it down! I hope there will be more, as I would love to read more about the main character and his family! It was a great horror story, with close friend relationship side stories, and a love story all in one!! Very well written, and a great story grabber that kept me reading!
This is a fair book, not one of the really good ones. You never find anyone to really pull hard for and the story is very limited. The 70s setting is pretty good, but did not really take me back to that time. Worth the small price for a decent read.
This was a very good story. I really liked the realism associated with the small town teenagers and their difficulties. The author does a great job of fleshing the characters out and keeping it moving at the same time. Great description, plenty of action, suspense, and a little lovin' to boot!
If you are looking for a werewolf book then you really need to read this one. The author does good job making the werewolves more than just simple beasts. They have a community, families, are for the most part in control of the change, and able think and control themselves in their wolf forms. This isn’t anything new by all means, but what makes this work standout is that the author does it without going too far and making them too “tame”, or making them otherwise normal humans who can just turn into wolves. In far too many werewolf novels the author goes too far to one side or the other.

The story itself is about a conflict between werewolves and humans, but it isn’t a good vs. evil story. Both sides have perpetrators and victims. In the end it makes for a good story about a group of werewolves trying to survive and make a life for themselves in a world dominated by humans.
This werewolf coming of age story (that's a genre now, right?) was an enjoyable read. It starts stronger than it ends and could have used with a more ruthless editor. But good writing and a good (if purposely predictable) story that pulls you along make it a worthwhile read.
