How to Seduce a Scoundrel Vicky Dreiling 9780446565387 Books

I couldn’t even finish this book. It was repetitive , no plot to speak of unless you count that all I read every chapter was how Julianna repeatedly complained about her crush on hawk yet did nothing about it the whole book. Absolutely no chemistry established, no love story to unfold ... this could have been a good book but every opportunity that could have been a stepping stone to build a romance ended without anything. Waste of my time

How to Seduce a Scoundrel Vicky Dreiling 9780446565387 Books Reviews

An entertaining regency read though the heroine doesn't really seduce the hero, so the title is a bit of a misnomer.
I enjoyed this, mostly, but there were definitely a few times where the naivete of the protagonist was a little much to believe. I get that sex education didn't happen back then, but doing that and then realizing what her man wants, and then unshy about disrobing struck me as a little oddly cross purposes.
Have read all of Ms. Dreiling’s books. They are very enjoyable and can’t wait for her to write more books!
So, in the first book we meet Tristan's little sister Lady Julianne Gatewick. She's in the background of How to Marry a Duke, which is perfectly fine, because that's not her story. In the first book we are also intruduce to his best friend Marcus Darcett, the Earl of Hawkfield. Now we jump forward to the next year Tessa, Tristan's wife is pregnant and is in confinement therefore can't be left behind. So, Tristan entrust his sister care to his best friend, who better to protect his sister than his best friend, right?

Julianne is excited to be in the care of her true love. Her hopes and dreams are about to come true until she hears the words utter from Hawks mouth "she's practically a sister." Everything comes crashing down in her poor little world. Don't you hate that. The course is set that she is going to seduce the scoundrel that broke her heart.

Definitely a fun read.
This is a nice follow up to Vicky's How To Marry a Duke. While I found duke to be witty with a lot of comedy elements, Scoundrel is more like an emotional rollercoaster. It is set about 9-10 months after the previous book at the beginning of the next season. The story starts with Tristan (hero from Duke) asking Hawk (as introduced in the previous book) to watch over his sister Julianne (also in previous book) for the season (due to Tessa - Duke's heroine, is having a baby).

Julianna hasn't changed much from the previous book, she is still impish and a bit immature. You find out more in the book regarding her insecurities stemming from her father's rejection and how it colors all her actions. There were times I just wanted to shake her because of how she handled a situation, which made things worse. While she wears her emotions, she also hardens herself from even taking chances from fear of getting hurt. It is only over the course of the book that she can learn to actually love like a woman instead of girlish fantasy.

As for Hawk, he is a man who has deep remorse for his actions. He understands that he continues to hurt people (his mother and sisters) but is so caught up in his grief and remorse of his youthful actions that he cannot stop the endless of cycle. He clearly feels he can never overcome this single incident and does not deserve to. Hence why he also feels he can never act on his feelings for Julianne. Not only would it hurt his relationship with his family, but he feels completely unworthy of not only being happy but of being loved. By the end of the book (and through my entire 2nd reading) Hawk is the type of man that woman should want

While a deep dark secret that the hero has to overcome in his past stereotypical line for a romance novel, it is pulled of here with such emotion that tissues should be kept at hand. For about the last 20% of the book you watch Hawk not only confront his past but move on from it, while also getting a 2nd chance at what he never thought he would have. It is absolutely heart wrenching and the way he handles the entire situation underscores the type of person Hawk is.

It is not until these scenes that the reader understands why Julianne and Hawk had to tear apart their relationship in order to get their happily ever after. The Julianna at the beginning of the book would never had understood or accepted Hawk's secret. She had to have her childhood ideals of him destroyed so she could see him as he is, a flawed man who's made mistakes and needing helping moving forward from them. Her dellusions must come down in order for her to mature and be the person who helps him move forward. And you can watch Julianne change, look at her actions, and the consequences of them and both accept those consequences and try to prevent them.

I also adored the Character of Aunt Hester. For those that read Duke, she is the meddling busybody character that Tristan's mother was. She was a perfect balance between Hawk and Julianne and I hope to see more of her in the next book.

I have read this novel twice, once before Duke and once after. While it can be read all by itself, the characters of the book have much more depth and come to life if you already know what goes on in the previous novel (as almost all the characters show up in Duke)
I fell in love with Hawk in Vicky Dreilling's first book in this series, HOW TO MARRY A DUKE. He is the best friend of the hero of that first book. They are a couple of regency rakes. Tristan needs a wife and Hawk is sidestepping that particular issue.

In this delightful book Hawk is coerced into acting as a guardian for Tristan's sister's fourth season on the marriage-mart. Hawk takes his role way too seriously causing Julianne many moments of frustration as she tries to enjoy the attentions of beaus and her season in London.

In the beginning I thought Hawk came off as a bit over bearing and not like the love of my heart from book #1. But we begin to understand that he feels an overwhelming obligation to protect Julianne because of his friendship with her brother. He knows he is attracted to her and he continually overcompensates for his imagined shortcomings. He is also tormented by a past mistake that makes him feel that he is not honorable enough to marry.

Julianne has been biding her time waiting for Hawk to fall in love with her. She has loved him since they were children. She is all but ready to give up on him when he starts acting so tyrannical. She is naïve and innocent and becomes more mature throughout the story.

Dreilling has created characters that we fall in love with and cheer for. We cry for their heartbreak and problems and we hope for their happily ever after. There is sensual tension and longing and a satisfying conclusion all done expertly by this new author.
