Sudden Response An EMS Novel RL Mathewson 9781479338788 Books

This story has the humor and dialogue I expect from this author. The characters are very likeable but it does seem to slow down in the middle. I wanted to push it along to get the story moving.
Other than that there is nothing bad to say. If you like R L Mathews you will like this work and the characters. If you haven't read her work but like funny, cute love stories this is for you.

Sudden Response An EMS Novel RL Mathewson 9781479338788 Books Reviews

I pretty much love anything RL writes. I started with the Neighbors From Hell series, then moved onto the Pyte/Sentinel series, then the Hollywood Hearts series, and then this book. I wasn't sure what to expect, even as I was 1/4 of the way through it. To me, that's a good thing.

Joe and Eric are best friends. They've always been best friends and nothing more since they were 8 years old. Although everyone around them expected them to end up married, they've remained just friends. They're practically a couple in every way minus the sex.they both secretly are attracted to the other but are so frightened of ruining their friendship they've never acted on it. They say that a near Death experience can change you perspective and that's what happens here. I did at times get upset with Eric over his high handed treatment of Joe. I thought his chauvinism was really bad. The pacing was perfect. I loved trying to figure out how things would work out.
Josephine (Joe) is an EMT and as far as she is concerned, she is one of the guys. She'd tear their heads off if she even suspected for a second that they doubted her being able to take care of herself and hold her own. No chauvinistic crap for her! She's a drop dead gorgeous woman with beautiful hair, killer eyes and sexy smile that drives men nuts. She's completely unaware of her beauty or men's desire(s). She simply has no clue just how hawt she is. She's very "down to earth" and committed solely to her job. And she's best friends with Eric Parish.

Ever since Eric and Joe have been kids, they'd been very "touchy feely". They snuggled and cuddled and sometimes Joe would sit on Eric's lap. Sometimes he'd throw his arm around her shoulders when they were walking or just sitting. They had even skinny dipped together a few times. She was his best friend. "His Joe". She kept him grounded and was always there for him without question. They had no secrets from each other.

I just love this Author....she simply writes the best dialogue ever..combined with intriguing plots. The dialogue is witty and humorous and completely captivating. She can set up a scene with such detailed precision that the reader feels like they're in the room. Fabulous writing skill!

I love how this Author can imbed, or ingrain a situation (like a guy and a girl being absolutely nothing more than the best of friends)....and then you know what this Author does?? She ever so gently begins to change that dynamic...she begins to turn that situation. The very one that the reader is convinced is set in concrete. She gradually, inch by deliciously slow inch, begins to add to the "friendship" and makes it something more. It's quite an awesome and fun journey.

This is a simple, sweet story about realizing you've fallen in love with your best friend and terrified to act upon that attraction for fear of not onnly damaging and losing your friend, but possibly not having your feelings reciprocated. (Awkward). This story is about taking chances.

While I've loved all of Ms. Mathewson's books that I've read (so far 5 and counting)...this is the first romantic story that holds very little intimacy between the two main characters. Most of this story deals with the "on-the-job action and drama" Joe and Eric must face daily as well as establishing how close they are as friends. Very little deals with the actual intimate side of their growing feelings.

I thought this story was romantically sweet in it's simplicity.
Sudden Response was not one of my favorite reads from R.L. Mathewson, but still it ranked very high.
It is a lovely story, a whole lot of fun, with a good plot and the ever-recurring theme that is R.L. Mathewson's obsession for food.

Now the reason why it only deserves 4 stars and not 5 is that I kind of disliked the fact that the main characters' history was a bit hard to believe aka not very plausible. Eric and Joe (short for Josephine) have been friends forever for over 20 years and have always done everything together until they both ended up working as EMTs. Together, on the same shift. They don't share a brother-sister relation, and they are not a couple either although they are so touchy-feely they act like one. Long story short they have been in love with each other since childhood but never wanted to risk losing their friendship by admitting their feelings.

Sure, there is a certain incident that makes them realise how much they love each other, but then again I find it (it being the idea of being super close and touchy-feely and in love without confessing to it for 20 years) a little hard to believe. But that's the only thing I found irritating, and it is easy to close an eye on this. Other than that, is was a wonderful read, and I wouldn't expect less from R.L. Mathewson.

By the way, I wonder when there will be a sequel to this as I would be more than happy to find out about Nathan, Eric's brother, and how he gets to find the "Big L".
Josephine (Joe) have been best friends with Eric since they were eight. During their close friendships both have had relationships with others but none ever lasted because of the bond those two shared. Joe though knows she needs to branch out on her own and that means distancing herself from Eric. Eric however doesn't want Joe to go anywhere and since they both work together, that should be no issue. That is until Joe signs up for a class and a possible career change.

Another fabulous read from R.L. Mathewson. I thought this had just the right mixture of humor and plot. I loved all the characters and hope there is another book soon in this series.
