I found the series at 7. It helped me so much. At 47, I still love to read. This was the only one I had not found until now. It's fun and imaginative.Tags : Five Dolls in a House [Helen Clare] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers.,Helen Clare,Five Dolls in a House,Bodley Head Children's Books,0370010086

Elizabeth owns a doll's house. A ginger-colored toy monkey lives on its roof, and Elizabeth is not surprised when one day, the monkey begins to speak to her. He has been spying on the occupants of the doll's house, listening to their conversations, and shouting rude remarks down the chimney. The monkey encourages Elizabeth to grow small enough to visit her dolls.
The doll's house is occupied by five dolls. The first is bossy Vanessa, an old fashioned doll who once belonged to Elizabeth's grandmother. She has very red cheeks, a loose wig of short, dark hair, and a battered hat with a sagging feather. Next is Lupin, a doll made of cotton waste, who often wears only a blue knitted vest (with many dropped stitches) and a hat. The third doll, Jane, is a sweet, kind and good-tempered doll who wears a long green nightgown and has leather feet. The fourth doll, Amanda, has wooden feet and wears a large brooch made of enameled rosebuds. She is the monkey's favorite. The fifth doll, Jacqueline, is Elizabeth's French doll. She is the prettiest of the group, and has very beautiful clothes. Jacqueline is a paying guest who has moved in with the other dolls so that she can learn to speak English.
When Elizabeth meets the dolls, they mistake her for their new landlady, and Elizabeth tells them that her name is Mrs. Small. During the course of the book's ten chapters, Elizabeth restores the house's electric lights; installs a bathtub; has a tea party with the dolls; cares for Jane when she catches measles; helps the dolls with their spring-cleaning; gives them a carriage drawn by a pair of mice; takes the dolls to a toy Post Office; attends a school run by Vanessa; has dinner with a duchess (the monkey in disguise); and attends Amanda and the monkey's wedding.
The adventures are rather absurd, and the dolls are more than a bit ridiculous, but this book would charm any reader who would not become impatient with their antics.
Helen Clare is the pseudonym of English author Pauline Clarke, who wrote many books for children, including The Return of the Twelves (British title The Twelve and the Genii), which won the 1962 Carnegie Award in England. The American version of Five Dolls in a House was illustrated by Aliki Brandenburg, and includes a glossary that translates potentially unfamiliar English words and phrases. This book was followed by at least four sequels Five Dolls in the Snow; Five Dolls and Their Friends; Five Dolls and the Duke; and Five Dolls and the Monkey.
