Choctaw Woman, a novel based on facts, covers the lives of a Choctaw Indian family during the early statehood days of Oklahoma (1907-1945). The tribe is disintegrating since the government has broken up the Choctaw Nation in 1899 and allocated each Indian a few hundred acres of land. Most Choctaws dress like cowboys and have taken up the white man’s ways. They speak Choctaw but most are slowly losing their identity and culture. In this book, a wealthy half-breed Choctaw, Simeon Winship, builds a small empire of 1500 head of cattle, 1100 acres of land, and several tenant houses. He survives a murder attempt by his eldest son and white in-laws who scheme to get his land and cattle. When Simeon dies in 1929 of TB, his widow, Eliza, must raise seven girls during the Great Depression. In Choctaw Woman, we follow Simeon’s youngest daughter Mela as her family tries to survive a maelstrom of violence, poverty, and disease. True life stories, told in novel form, explain the life Mela and her family live as the Great Depression comes to an end and World War II rages. Follow Mela to Tulsa where she works in an aircraft manufacturing plant and on to San Francisco with her new Army husband. At war’s end, they return to her roots in Oklahoma and then on to Atlanta and his roots, where they begin a new life.

Choctaw Woman eBook Richard Johnston

This book paints a pretty good picture of what America was like 100 years ago. It also tells the story of the American Dream, or at least one persons pursuit of the American Dream. If you're Native American, this story will give you one more reason to be proud of your heritage. There aren't nearly enough stories about successful Native Americans out there. On the same note, if you're woman or if you have daughters , this story really captures how strong our daughters and sisters are capable of being. Lastly, if you require no inspiration, this book is still pretty entertaining.

Choctaw Woman eBook Richard Johnston Reviews

Choctaw Woman made me laugh and it made me cry. While Richard Johnston was writing about his mother, he could have been writing about anyone of our mothers. A strong woman of conviction and family values with morals developed by her parents and those who raised her. It truly did (and still does) take a village to raise a child. Thank you Richard.
As I read about Mela's struggles and dreams, I found myself cheering her onward through the ups and downs we call "life". Author Richard Johnston described each scene and location in a way that made it easy for the reader to visualize the moment realistically. Chapter by chapter, I sensed I was there watching from the bushes. Mela was a strong woman, and from age 8, she stayed focused on her goal of owning a home. I wonder how many women today could say that they saved money to pay cash for their first home ever since childhood?! Also, she continued her education throughout most of her life. We should all take note of her example and never stop learning!

Great story! I gave it five stars and have told my friends this is a "must" read.
well written and informative book
Thank You Buster!! I remember meeting you years ago with my mom, Sue Winship. I wish she could have seen the final product. Luckily, her grandkids will read and feel the pride that I feel as I read your book. P.S. I am not the snake bite Nakina.
Couldn't put it down. My family stories, I love it soooo much it made me laugh and cry. Great job Richard Johnson
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Many of the stories were familiar to me since Ben & Flossie Winship are my grandparents. And yes, Flossie was quite spirited...I couldn't help but laugh at the description of her as a young woman.
I'm happy that some of the old family stories are recorded for future generations, & proud to be a Winship, as well as a Choctaw woman.
